BJC HealthCare Primary Data Center

1 2 / 2

The data center houses 1,850 servers, 71 miles of copper cabling, 10.5 miles of fiber cabling and 345 databases. The project included a significant investment in infrastructure equipment and a hardened energy center to support Tier III, N+1 data center requirements.

Clayco, in a joint venture with TW Constructors, completed a 34,700-square-foot Primary Data Center for BJC HealthCare. Despite forty-six weather-related delays, the new data center construction was completed two months ahead of schedule.

BJC required a new primary data center as increasingly automated hospital operations led to a higher demand for IT services. Redundant mechanical and electrical systems were put in place in order to avoid outages. The critical structural design was built to withstand F-3 tornado conditions as well. In addition, the team completed site improvements and infrastructure at the existing Progress West HealthCare Center site.

The data center was designed, built and is maintained to protect and conserve the environment while providing a healthy living and working setting. Strategies that helped achieve LEED NC v2.2 Gold certification include a high-efficiency/eco-friendly, water-cooled central plant; a high-density heat containment system; high-efficiency, low-flow plumbing fixtures within the building; and the incorporation of bioswale wetland filter systems throughout the project site.
