Clayco provided design-build services for a residence hall development at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Built on 12 acres, the overall project consists of 8 residence halls, approximately 2,000 beds total and a pre-cast concrete, 700-car parking garage- all completed in just over three years. The eight halls are cast in place, post-tensioned concrete podium structures with wood framing on top at approximately 60,000 square feet each. The exterior stucco façades consist of two complementary colors and Nichiha panels; a major refresh to the outdated campus. Each new facility houses 256 students via suites with two-bedroom units and two beds in each bedroom. The campus also includes a pool and recreational center.
Through construction, the team had to strategically maintain a positive bed count as old buildings were demolished and new ones were constructed or renovated, meaning our team had to create a plan to support both housing operations and the student’s safety. Protected wetlands also surrounded the site, adding an additional layer of coordination with the local municipality. Despite these parameters, the team successfully completed all eight buildings. Though the overall construction went seamlessly, there were lessons learned for the team to carry into each phase. One opportunity to better the projects moving forward arose with an incorrect layout and subsequent installation of piles in phase two. The team collaboratively resolved the design without incurring costs to the project, minimizing rework and still finishing on time, and carrying the resolution through subsequent phases.

Our Clayco team celebrated the outstanding choices that are being made on the Savannah College of Art & Design project. SCAD Weston Dyson officially went 1,000 days without lost time and celebrated by giving ice cream and soda to each worker onsite. We also recognized employees who have committed and followed Clayco “Rules to Live by “ during their time here onsite. The most important thing is that each one of the workers on a Clayco site has the ability to see, hear, touch, hold, run, and play with their families when they leave this project.
