Bayer Corp. Shawnee Distribution Center

The new facility distributes Advantage Topical Solution and other animal health care products for Bayer’s Animal Health Division.

Clayco teamed up with Springfield, Missouri-based Killian Construction Co. and completed Bayer Corp.’s 247,320-square-foot distribution center in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. The new facility distributes Advantage Topical Solution and other animal health care products for Bayer’s Animal Health Division.

Located at Bayer’s Animal Health Division headquarters, the approximately $7 million distribution center joined three other buildings on the campus, all of which are connected via pedestrian corridor. The distribution center sits 5 feet lower than the building to which it will be connected, which required a series of ramps and retaining walls to accomplish the link. An AGV (automatic guided vehicle) was used for material handling between buildings. Constructed using tilt-up concrete over structural steel, the facility features 10 dock doors and 35-foot clear-height ceiling.

Lamar Johnson Collaborative, the architect for the project, carefully designed the facility in such a way that it would not disturb nearby residences. For example, docks are located on the north side to reduce truck noise on the south side, which is where the residences are located.

The new distribution center enabled the Animal Health Division to consolidate operations at its headquarters. In addition to warehouse space, the facility houses the division’s call center and e-commerce operations. Both are located in the building’s mezzanine area. The Animal Health Division distribution center was Clayco’s first project for Bayer.
