The building provides a platform for Caterpillar to receive various parts from vendors throughout the region; assemble them using a system of bridge cranes, jib cranes and Gorbel cranes; paint/finish and package the parts; and either store or immediately ship them to the end user.

Clayco and Lamar Johnson Collaborative provided design-build services for this 1.5 million-square-foot storage and assembly facility for Caterpillar, Inc. The single-story facility, located northwest of Dayton, Ohio, was designed and constructed in less than 10.5 months, using a fast-track approach. Despite being set back by 43 weather days and multiple design changes from Caterpillar, Clayco kept the project on schedule. The building provides a platform for Caterpillar to receive various parts from vendors throughout the region; assemble them using a system of bridge cranes, jib cranes and Gorbel cranes; paint/finish and package the parts; and either store or immediately ship them to the end user.

This project has achieved LEED certification. Sustainable design features include all-concrete paving, a reflective PVC roof, low-flush toilets, incorporation of regional materials, and landscaping that requires no irrigation. Other building highlights include 30-foot clear heights, concrete tilt-up and curtainwall façades, clerestory windows, skylights, motion and daylight-sensing fluorescent light fixtures, and high-velocity, low-speed fans to aid in ventilation.
