Constructed of post and beam, heavy timber and masonry, the building features exposed brick, expansive windows, high ceilings and hardwood floors to evoke the Romanesque Revival style, as well as street-level retail shops.

Clayco provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design-build and general construction services for the 340,000-square-foot renovation of the historic Merchandise Mart building on Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Constructed of post and beam, heavy timber and masonry, the building features exposed brick, expansive windows, high ceilings and hardwood floors to evoke the Romanesque Revival style, as well as street-level retail shops. Out of the 213 loft apartments, 85 units are designated as “affordable” for residents earning less than the median income in the region. The project was funded in part by tax-exempt bonds, low-income housing credits, and federal and state historic renovation tax credits.
