Project Milestone
The Clayco team is proud to celebrate being named Space Ready! The Rivian R2 Plant Expansion space was ready in the summer of 2025.
The Rivian R2 Plant Expansion project is a major expansion of Rivian’s existing campus in Normal, Illinois. This multi-phase design-build initiative includes a combination of greenfield construction, facility expansions, and the renovation and repurposing of existing manufacturing spaces to support the production of the new R2 vehicle and future Rivian models.
A key component of the expansion is a new 1.1 million square-foot facility that will house the Body Shop, General Assembly, and End-of-Line operations for the R2 program. In parallel, the project entails reconfiguring current battery and drive unit assembly areas, as well as constructing new buildings dedicated to Battery Pack Assembly and PTED painting.
Additional infrastructure improvements include the erection of a new Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) building and the installation of various conveyance structures to seamlessly connect new and existing spaces. The scope also encompasses new employee parking areas, outbound logistics and vehicle charging lots, a new high-speed test track, and a Buzz, Squeak, and Rattle (BSR) track for quality verification.
In total, the expansion and renovation efforts span more than 2.1 million square feet, significantly enhancing Rivian’s production capacity and operational efficiency.
