Sharon Dowell – The Standard at Columbia Mural
CRG and One Columbia for Arts & Culture came together to find the perfect muralist for The Standard in South Carolina.
One Columbia is a non-profit organization formed to support and promote tourism in Columbia, South Carolina. Their mission is to advise, amplify, and advocate for the unified arts and culture community.
Together with CRG, they developed a committee of business owners, artists and stakeholders to review potential muralists. Over 100 artists submitted a proposal for the mural and the committee was excited to select Sharon Dowell.
Sharon Dowell is a painter with a focus on works on murals and public art. Intertwining themes course through her paintings; the energy of place, renewal, regeneration, and redemption. Thus, it is important for her murals and public art to also serve as a vehicle to give back and shape communities for the better.
Sharon’s mural for The Standard reflects the historic black-owned business district that helped shape the area into the robust neighborhood it now is. The library next door to the project and the murals has a collaborative curriculum about those historic businesses and offers a tour map of the neighborhood for visitors to learn and explore.
