Benson Hill Ingredients, LLC.’s new facility is included in the 39 North ag-tech innovation district, which is a 600-acre district surrounding the Danforth Plant Science Center, BRDG Park, Helix Incubator, Yield Lab and Bayer.

Clayco and Lamar Johnson Collaborative were the design-builders of the new headquarters for fast-growing crop improvement company Benson Hill Ingredients, LLC. Benson Hill Ingredients, LLC. will occupy the majority of the $52 million, 160,000-square-foot facility on the campus of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in Creve Coeur, Missouri.

This project utilized the full design-build and self-perform concrete resources of Clayco, Lamar Johnson Collaborative and Concrete Strategies. The 4-story tilt-up design includes curtainwall and additional exterior architectural features.

The building features flexible research laboratories, shared workspaces, and additional open common elements such as lounges, fitness, yoga and break space designed to encourage collaborative engagement and to improve the quality of the work environment beyond the laboratory bench. The architectural, structural and MEP systems have been designed to support laboratory and research environments in an effort to attract lab/research tenants.

The new facility accommodates Benson Hill Ingredients, LLC.’s tremendous growth as they expand product development capacity and ramp up commercialization efforts to improve food and ingredients on a global scale.

Beyond These Walls

A crane operator on our Benson Hill jobsite noticed a man who would watch the construction team day in and out. Eventually, our teammate introduced themselves and discovered the man’s name was Harold and that he lived in the nearby nursing home. Before retiring, Harold had been a crane operator for over 50 years. Everyday afterward, the two would share a lunch or a coffee to discuss construction work and Harold would offer critiques and insight to the young crane operator.
