The USPS had been working to modernize its delivery network, and one component of this initiative was combining and centralizing carrier operations in new and larger sorting and delivery centers.
This initiative had enabled the postal service to utilize more electric vehicles since more routes were at the optimal length to make such vehicles operationally feasible, and since the vehicles were originating from facilities with enhanced electricity infrastructure to support the necessary charging stations.
These larger centers had better infrastructure and adequate space, docks, conveyors, and material handling equipment to enable more efficient operations. These also modernized and leveraged current underutilized and vacant post facilities around the nation.
